Why is a charge controller is not necessary for a 5-watt solar panel?
My Car Charger 5 Watt solar panel battery regulator manual states that load is not required for panels less than 15 watts. I'm trying to understand the physics of why this is the case. Even if my panel is only say 15 volts off to 350 mA of the battery could eventually overload one? What if the 5-watt solar panel were connected to a smaller battery like a 7amp 12v, which might overload the battery? BTW, which has a diode to keep the voltage of the battery from discharging into the solar panel.
A typical battery Lead acid can safely be "trickle charged" at the rate C/100, where C is the capacity (in the case of car batteries, which is about 50Amp hours typical). C/100 for a 50Ah battery is 500mA, so no harm is 350mA. The trickle charging just over losses due to self-discharge of the battery, which is quite high in the lead-acid batteries. Your present is also limited by the internal impedance of the solar cell and diode. 7Ah In a small, battery 12V then yes, you run the risk of overload if you leave your solar panel connected, because loads in about C/20.
