chimney liner code?
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a specific fire code regarding the insulation of a stainless steel chimney liner (for wood stoves). If so, can you direct me to the certain fire/code. I was told by some sweeps that it is required, and by others that it is not required. I’m obviously concerned that the sweeps (telling me that the insulation/blanket is required), are looking for more money for the job by saying that insulation around the liner is required by code. I will be hiring someone to put two liners in, and I was wondering if the blanket/insulation is absolutely necessary. Also, I’ve been told by all contractors that if a liner were to go in with the blanket/insulation around it, then the existing flue tiles would have to come out for it to fit (ie: it would be an additional cost to take out the tiles). Any help regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated as well as pointing me in the direction of fire codes requiring insulated lining.
Check with the code enforcement department in your city because the requirements vary. (You can also ask your fire marshall). I just had a chimney fire and they are not required in our city, but a spark arrestor is. I would definitely take the word of the city’s code enforcement officer over the sweeps and did to discover that it was not necessary in our city.
