There are some products in the marlet claiming to reduce the electricity bill by increasing the power factor of electronic devices and motors. Is this claim right or its just a hoax?
Electric companies generally require users of lots of power to adjust power factor so as to minimize the circulating reactive current in the lines. But according to ref. 1, the watt-hour meter doesn't respond to reactive current, so if you're a small user you don't need to adjust the PF, and it doesn't waste energy.
However ref. 2 states that power companies are beginning to re-think the problem, and may start charging something for reactive loads on the basis of increased line capacity requirement. So you may want to, um, react to that. If the devices being marketed seem expensive, this could be a DIY project. You would measure the PF and correct for the presumably inductive component with a shunt capacitor whose value you calculate from PF and wattage. You'd have to do that separately for each such device.
