Energy Efficient Air Conditioners
Is it better (more cost and energy efficient) to run a window air conditioner unit continuously?
My roommate says it's more cost and energy efficient to continuously run the window AC units on low, as opposed to only turning the units on when we're home. I disagree--I think it's better to turn the units off when we're not here and turn them on when we are.
Which is the better option? Does the cost/energy savings of continuously running the air conditioner on low only apply to central air and not apply to window units?
Thanks for the info. I'm in Washington DC, which gets HOT during the summer. I'm not particularly concerned with the amount of time it takes for the room to cool off or my stuff getting damaged in the heat, I would just like to conserve energy usage.
Being a window unit would obviously be different than central air.
If you had central it is advisable to run it all the time to keep the inside air at a given temp, and the whole unit would 'rest. The one problem with a window unit is that the fan is constantly on with the cooling unit going on and off. The fan is what would use more electricity because it's on all the time.
