Which air filter is best for you?
Although each heating and Air Conditioning unit (HVAC) is different, when it comes to HVAC filters, a specific kind of filter is not required. There are many options that should be taken into consideration when choosing an HVAC filter. Because all HVAC filters are universal to units, some qualifications apply when choosing the right filter for your home or business such as:
- · filter size
- · air quality and dust/dander removal
- · air flow
Filter Size
Find the size that is right for your unit to ensure adequate air flow and air quality.
Each HVAC unit is built differently. Therefore, any single unit may not have the same size filter as the next. If the filter is not sized correctly to fit your unit, do not bend the filter. This will minimize the air flow cleaning potential. Contaminated air will travel around where the filter is bent replacing it back into your establishment and on your system components.
Air Flow
For most filters, it is pertinent that you replace your filter once a month. Yet, some filters such as a high performance filter can withstand a span of 90 days. In the turn of irregular replacement of your HVAC filter, the dust, dander and other particles caught in the cycling of air between your establishment and unit can restrict the air flow. With this restricted air flow due to a dirty filter, your unit works harder to function while it is being strived for air because of the unclean filter. The more worked your unit and its components are, the more chance there will be of faulting and eventually breaking of your HVAC system’s parts.
Air Quality
For people with allergies, excellent air quality is a must. The choice you make on increasing air quality within your establishment will affect how you live within your residence or how employees work within your business.
Each kind of filter provides different features to increasing air quality. Yet, the best filter theoretically for removing more dust and dander are pleated filters. If pleated filters are not the right option for you, certain filters are available in tightly woven formats where more particles are caught within the process.
Each filter encompasses a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating. The higher the MERV rating, the fewer particles that passes through the filter. Typical filters with a 1-4 rating are washable, electrostatic or fiberglass throwaways. A 5-8 rating normally encompasses pleated, cartridge and some throwaway filters. Filters with ratings higher than a nine provide superior air quality.
The different types of filters include:
- · Fiberglass air filters, although cheaper than others, are not recommended to be used in any HVAC unit. Typically called poly filters, these filters have a low air flow quality yet, they allow most dust to pass through in turn decreasing air quality. These filters are good for people who forget to change their filters often.
- · A poly filter maintains higher efficiency over the life of the filter. These filters have the ability to use an electrostatic charge allowing more to be captured in the filter within air transfer between your establishment and HVAC unit.
- · An electrostatic filter is permanent and washable requiring monthly cleaning. If not properly maintained these filters will restrict air flow.
- · If you are looking for efficiency, the High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filter is your best choice. A HEPA air filter will remove almost all allergens from the air that passes through your HVAC equipment by trapping particles in the deepest point of its thick pleated surface area encompassing roughly 7 pleats per inch. Yet, if not maintained properly it can restrict air flow through your HVAC unit. Unlike most other filters, HEPA filters are able to be cleaned and reused. Yet, for maximum efficiency and air quality, it is not recommended to reuse any HVAC air filters.
- · Pleated filters are the best, normally used filters on the heating and air conditioning filter market. Easier on the consumer pocket, pleated filters are cheaper than that of a better quality Hepa Filter. Pleated filters are similar to that of a High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filter. The HEPA filter has more pleats per inch than that of a regular pleated filter. In both the HEPA and normal pleated filters which can range in thickness of 1 to 6 inches, dust and particles are caught in the lowest point of the pleat. If not changed often, air flow can be restricted.
Your choice for exceptional air quality within your establishment will determine which kind of filter is best for you.
