If a leak is important, immediately turn off the water, either in the shut-off fixture or the main shutoff valve. You probably have to replace the section leak from the pipeline. These methods work for small leaks only.

• Clamps should stop most leaks for several months if they are used with a solid rubber blanket. It's a good idea to buy a sheet of rubber and some clamps sized to fit your pipes. You can purchase these items in a hardware store and keep them on hand just for this purpose.
• A sleeve clamp that exactly fits the diameter pipe works best. Wrap a rubber blanket over the leak, then screw the clamp down on the blanket.
• A hose clamp Adjustable used with a rubber blanket stops a pinhole leak.
• If nothing else is on hand, use a C-clamp, a small wooden block and a blanket rubber.
• In a pinch, try applying epoxy putty around a joint in a clamp will not work. The tube must be dry for the putty to adhere. Turn water supply and let the water drain off until the putty hardens completely on the pipe.
• If you do not have a clamp or putty, you can still stop a small leak temporarily by plugging with a pencil.

Maintaining Your Septic Tank

Septic tanks do not automatically empty solid waste. The remaining solids in the bottom of the tank, and an additional "layer of dirt" the ways in which water moves through the system of sewers to the line outside the tank and drain field. These solids must be drained at least once every three years or so, but if you have a garbage disposal you may need to be emptied more often. Use these guidelines to help determine how often to empty the tank:

• The storage volume of septic tank
• The amount of wastewater generated per day, per person
• The volume of solid waste from garbage disposals and toilets per day

Garbage Disposals often twice the amount of solids in the septic tank. You must also be careful to use only approved septic toilet paper in your system. Never pour oil or grease drains, which can damage your system and do the cleaning of septic tanks more difficult.
