Refrigerator not cold; freezer OK. Can dirty coils cause this?
Yesterday my refrigerator was warm. The freezer was cold, but frosty. The drain tube was frozen. I unplugged it, let it thaw, and now it's cold(for now). While unplugged, I vacuumed the coils under the frig - they were filthy. Could that have been the cause? I know it's bad for efficiency, etc, but can dirty coils cause the drain tube to freeze? If not, I assume it's the defrost timer or heater. I"m debating whether to have a repair guy come out.
Dirty coils should make it work harder and actually provide warmth. I'd check to make sure every single vent has room around it. Some people shove their fridge so full of stuff there is no room for air to circulate.
Is the outside rubber seal trim cracked anywhere? That could be letting in air if it doesn't get a good seal when you open and close the door.
I have a freezer on top and once had to replace the little heater coil inside to it defrosts itself. I unplugged it and then opened both doors. I took off the metal colored plate in front that is in between the fridge itself and freezer. The plastic tray lifted up and there was styrofoam on top of the heater coils. They were completely covered in frost so I had to let them thaw out. Once all that frozen mess was thawed I replaced the coil itself and then sealed everything back up.
It was really easy to do and it was a cheap fix for me. I believe also, as I was cleaning there was another hole in that compartment for air to go down into the fridge part. It was full of gunk.
