How does the solar charger?

I recently found a tiki Solar Lamp posts in the trash and decided to take it home to see how works, but is a little confusing to me. My voltmeter said that, at full brightness, the sun is 1.5x2 "solar panel takes about .25 V (which is a quarter of 1 volt). Connects to a lamp / battery holder and has a comparison circuit to know when it is charging and when to turn the light .. .. but is the perception that interest me. The negative terminal of the solar cell goes directly to the battery negative (2 x 1.2v NiCDs), while the positive goes through a Schottky diode and then to the battery. I always thought Schottky diodes have a voltage drop about .2 V to 4 V, which would be more than the solar cell produces .. How charging the battery?

What is the input impedance of the voltmeter? You might be dropping some voltage while measuring it. Try solar cell to an op-amp circuit with a gain of 1, to prevent the load during the measurement.
