Solar Heat/Sounds Out Burt Bacharach $11.99 Recording information: 01/15/1968-08/19/1968.The recordings contained on this Vampi Soul reissue were originally released in 1968 and 1969, respectively. They make up bookends of the trio of Cal Tjader LPs on Skye Records, a label founded and co-owned by Tjader, Gary McFarland, and Gabor Szabo. The other set, Cal Plugs In, was released between these two. It is a live date with and doesn't fit quite so seamlessly. Solar Heat was the first of these and featured the vibraphonist and bandleader in a stellar group with conguero Ray Barretto, Joao Donato on organ, Michael Abene on harpsichord and Fender Rhodes, both McFarland (who arranged this recording) and Tjader on vibes, percussionist Orestes Vilat , and bassists Bobby Rodriguez and Chuck Rainey. It's a killer program of pop tunes like "La Bamba," and "Never My Love," as well as killer McFarland originals such as "Fried Bananas." Track list notwithstanding, this is one of Tjader's finest moments on record. His soloing and melodic invention is delightfully showcased as the logical center between Donato's brilliant organ playing and the crystalline arrangements. The latter album was more than likely a head-scratcher for even Tjader fans at the time. The band was made up of Los Angeles studio musicians with small string and horn sections. The material includes some of the big hits of the era like "I Say a Little Prayer," "Walk On By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "You'll Never Get to Heaven," "Message to Michael," and others. Tjader stripped the complex Bacharach harmonics back to the bone and focused instead on his simple yet gorgeous melodies as a way of putting those tunes into both pop and jazz contexts. ~ Thom Jurek |
