Solar Powered Attic Fans – The hows and whys of your installation
When it comes to energy use these days a lot of people are seeking alternative energy sources and as such much solar power is catching on. At its current level of technological developments, solar energy is a useful means to power small motors to implement simple devices. The fans are such a simple device and in many cases using a solar fan makes more sense than a fan powered by conventional means.
Many manufacturers offer solar power roof ventilators to ventilate and help keep attics cooler. If there is inadequate ventilation in the attic and poor sealing between the attic and other rooms of the house, ceiling fans powered by electric means can potentially move air out of the house in the attic. This not only compromise energy efficiency, but may also increase the risk of moisture problems in the attic.
Fans solar is based on a small solar panel (typically 10 or 20 watts) to power a DC motor, when the sun is shining. The fans are installed with intake vents to provide high-capacity electrical power without ventilation running costs. Most vents are mounted in the ceiling near the high mountains and combined with soffit or gable vents for balanced intake and exhaust air streams. Ventilation only is provided when the sun is sufficient to power the fan motor. The maximum speed of the fan tend to coincide with the heat of the sun and therefore most need for attic ventilation. By reducing the temperature of the attic, ceiling fans can help reduce cooling loads in summer, while at the same time providing ventilation without the added burden of utility.
Using solar energy to supply air vents in your attic means that eliminates the need for electrical wiring in this part of the house and a solar ventilator uses no electricity is also avoiding the ongoing operating costs. You find that the equipment costs for an attic fan solar power are superior to those of a conventionally powered fan (about $ 200 more) but this is usually offset by the money saved by not having to extend electrical wiring in the attic. Besides the solar attic fans will also find engines used in greenhouses, sheds, garages, sheds, outside buildings and painting rooms.
