The Russian Znamya 2 was a 20-meter wide (flat) mirror, launched in 1992. It was designed to test the viability of the pieces illumination of the surface of the Earth by reflecting sunlight from orbiting mirrors. Znamya 2 was shown (for a few hours only), near the space station Mir, orbiting at an altitude of ~ 390 km. (A) Calculate what size point on the surface of the earth was illuminated by Znamya 2. (B) Assuming that the mirror was optimal so it was perpendicular ~ to sunlight, the amount of solar energy received per second?
The Sun is about 1 / 2 large degree on the sky, what the cone of light from an infinite number of small mirror would be 1 / 2 degree wide field * 390 kilometers or 0.5 degrees So = 3.4 kilometers into the ground. Thus The mirror 20 meters wide to a point 3.4 kilometers + 20 meters wide by 3.42 km wide. The area would be about 9,186,331 meters square, or nearly 30,000 times greater in area of 314 square meters of mirror 20 meters (assuming it is round). So the sunlight would be 30,000 times less intense than direct sunlight.
