What is the difference between power generation by solar cells and solar thermal?

Solar photo-voltaic is the absorption of a photon by a semiconductor which causes an electron to be emitted. The frequency of photons that can be absorp is determined by the orbit of the outer electrons in the semiconductor therefore, most solar cells only absorb the energy of light in the infrared spectrum. Several newer solar cells are made of different materials to absorb more than one frequency or an intermediate material that absorbs different frequencies and re-emitted in the desired frequency. Therefore the energy generation from solar cells is the generation of a useful form of energy of a small portion of sunlight energy falling on the cell. The energy generated by solar cells is in a form valuable enough to sell to the network. Solar thermal energy is the tendency of materials in general to absorb energy from a broad spectrum of light and reissued as heat (very low infrared frequency) and use that energy as heat directly, instead of trying to turn it into something else. Therefore solar thermal power generation is the generation of a form not very useful for the energy of a large portion of the sunlight falling on the solar collector. Solar thermal is great if only the heat you want.
