What is the “safe zone” in pregnancy?
After the obvious 3 month uncertainty period, what is the basic time when you know you won’t lose your baby during pregnancy?
Safe is relative – a baby can be stillborn or die of complications even at full term. Generally though, there is a chance of survival starting at 22 weeks (some will say starting at 20 weeks but those odds are small). The baby would have to be hospitalized but with advanced medical treatments available today, can grow and thrive. With every week thereafter, the odds improve. Once the baby’s lungs are developed, (around 37-38 weeks) the baby is full term and is likely to have a healthy birth.
I know I eagerly awaited the 22 week milestone with my pregnancy, but still, try to focus on the positive and trust in the unfolding of the miracle inside you (made easier through prayer if that is an option for you), rather than getting caught up in fear of a loss. Avoiding stress/fear is good for you and the baby too!
